Past and Current Seasons

In the 2014 FRC season, Team 5298 competed in the New York City Regional held April 2014 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. In our initial exposure to robotics competition, we placed 36th out of a field of 66 teams, and 3rd out of the 5 rookie teams. It should be noted that since we were a new school, our team had 9th grade students only, and that our students had no prior robotics experience. We learned a lot not only about robotics, but also about teamwork, time management, and perseverance.

In 2018, we participated in two Regional Events for the first time, traveling outside New York City to attend both a Regional and off-season event upstate.  With a full team of students in grades 9 through 14, we have students working in small teams on electrical/electronic components, programming, and mechanical components.  We also have a team working on graphic design of t-shirts and buttons, marketing materials, website updates, photography/video, and more.  We have four full-time and several additional part-time mentors and alumni, and we have been busy not only working on our robot this year but also attending events like Stuy Splash and practice tournaments at area high school.

In 2018, we also launched our first FTC team - which a similar challenge for smaller robots. This takes place through a partnership with NYC FIRST, in which some of our students take a special class and travel to a maker space on Roosevelt Island throughout the week. In its first season, our FTC team brought home our first trophy and competed in a Regional Championship! 9th grade students first learn about robotics using the VEX program in their first Engineering Design class.
